As I understand, aluminum is less reactive than magnesium. Less reactive means longer life but lesser protection. Aluminum would last longer in corrosive water conditions, but would offer less protection in less corrosive water. If changing the rod doesn't bother you I would use magnesium. Just an eye on it every couple of years until you get a calibration on its life span.
