I believe that Suburban recommends using the Magnesium anode rod unless one is in a place with very corrosive water. In that case, Suburban says to use the Aluminum anode rod. One does run the risk that the aluminum anode rod will not provide adequate protection. However, if the magnesium one is corroded away, you end up with no protection.
