As far as I know, the fan does not run independently of the AC or furnace. You would need to set the fan to high or low, then set the thermostat to AC but set the temperature to a point above where the compressor will cycle. For example, if the temperature is 70 degrees, set the speed to high or low, and set the temperature for 75 degrees. The fan should run, even though the compressor does not cycle. You could also set the heater on with the fan set to high or low but set the temperature below your current temperature so that the furnace does not fire.
Setting the switch to Auto just means that the fan will not run constantly. I'm going from memory since our R-Pod is being repaired and is not here for me to double-check.
